A newlywed housewife (18) abducted and gang-raped the Hajigram area of Dighalia Upazila of Khulna. This incident took place on the evening of December 29. Earlier on December 12, another bride was raped in the same area. Police said Dalim Sardar (30) who is the son of local UP member Mizanur Rahman Mirza, and two or three of his accomplices gang-raped the housewife after abducting her.

Dighalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ahsanullah Chowdhury said Akram Hossain Mistry’s newlywed daughter from Kathati Para area of Senhati was walking home from Beleghat on foot. She abducted and gang-raped. After the incident, they threatened her not to disclose the gang-rape. Later, the survivor-woman went home and told her mother about the incident and the family lodged a written complaint to the Dighalia police station that night.
Earlier, on December 12, Nuru Moral (45) a landlord, broke the house of newlywed women in the Bativita area and raped her. On the 17th day of the first incident, another incident of rape took place within a radius of one kilometer.
In protest of the two incidents of gang-rape in the last 18 days, the social organization Alo’s procession organized a human chain at the Dighalia Upazila crossroads on December 30 at 3 pm.
Speakers from the human chain said, ‘the rape epidemic has taken shape due to non-implementation of strict enforcement of the law and the first incident has been repeated.’
