The court imposed a life sentence on older brother Moshahid Mia for the murder of younger sister Salma Begum in Dirai, Sunamganj. Thursday, (December 1) District and Sessions Judge of Sunamganj, Mosammat Zakia Parveen announced the verdict .Mashahid Mia, a convicted felon, is at large.
According to the Case , Salma Begum, daughter of Azizur Rahman of Bharargaon village, Dirai Upazila, Sunamganj, lived with her only daughter at her father’s house because she didn’t live with her husband. In Dirai Bazaar, Azizur Rahman ran a small shop. On August 24, 2015, Salma Begum’s older brother, Mashahid Mia, called her a “slut” and said she had no character. At one point in the fight, Salma Begum was killed by being hit in the head with a stick in front of her 3-year-old daughter.
The body was buried in a hole he dug behind their house. Later, Mashahid, the older brother, informed the family member and the locals that Salma Begum had gone to her uncle’s (Mama) house without telling anyone. But Salma Begum was nowhere to be found when her family looked everywhere, even at her uncle’s house.
On August 25, Salma Begum’s father went to the Dirai police station and filed a missing report. For some time after this, Masahid avoided returning to his family. Salma Begum’s three-year-old daughter, who had been living with her grandma since they escaped four months prior, claimed to her that her uncle Mashahid had murdered her mother and buried her body behind the house.
After four months of GD, Salma Begum’s father filed a murder case in the Sunamganj Judicial Magistrate Court, when he finds some conversation is suspicious with Mashahid Mia. The investigating officer of the case arrested Mosahid Mia. During initial police interrogation, he confessed to the murder and buried the body. Later Salma Begum’s body was recovered.
In this incident, Mashahid gave a confessional statement under section 164 in the court. After being released on bail from the court, and absconded. The second investigating officer of the case, SI Samshul Haque, filed the charge sheet in the court on May 23, 2015.
The court judge announced the verdict on Thursday after reviewing the testimony of thirteen and other evidence. The judge sentenced him to another 7 years of imprisonment as he was absconding on bail.
Public Prosecutor Sohail Ahmad Chail Miah handling the case for the state. He said that the court sentenced the only absconding accused to life imprisonment in the case of the murder of the younger sister by the elder brother in Dirai. Humayan Manjur Chowdhury, the lawyer of the accused, said that he did not get justice in the court. The accused will appeal to the High Court.
